ABC Editorial: the process of creating, editing and publishing a book.

Did you know that in order for this book to come into your hands, there is an industry behind that mobilizes 365 days a year? The book chain (authors, publishers, distributors and booksellers) as well as all the professionals who are part of this process.

We spoke with Álvaro Ibañez, commercial director and Jairo Acosta, Bibliographic Advisor of Grupo Editorial Ibañez, who told us the step by step.

1. The idea

First of all there is the author, the creator who initiates everything, he chooses which publisher to send the manuscript to. The author sends it and there begins a review process by it, through a committee that analyzes the work sent by the author. If the publisher is interested, the author is invited to sign a contract that stipulates, among other details, the number of copies to be published. The book is diagrammed and sent to the author to make the corrections that he considers pertinent. The style checker checks the text. The author receives the manuscript again so that he can make the final corrections, and then the final layout is made.

2. Path to publication, printing process

The book is sent to print and is subsequently folded, fired and glued. It is defined if it will have a hard or rustic cover. It is sent to refine according to the designed measure. The cover can be submitted by the author or designed by the publisher and there is a final review by the quality control department.

3. Get to the bookstore!

It is sent to the publisher's warehouse, and from there they are in charge of the diffusion and distribution process for bookstores nationally and internationally. In case all units of the book are sold, the reprint or a new edition is negotiated again with the author.
