Industries and companies in the world are increasingly in solidarity with the world and propose sustainable options within their productions. One of the most used and recommended alternatives is the use of packaging and labels that can be sustainable and conscious, however, the use of these must also comply with the respective regulations and legislation.

Find out below which are the most relevant:

1. Legislation on consumer protection: good practices regarding health and hygiene in the manufacturing, handling, maintenance, transport and use processes must be clear, specific and take care of the consumer's well-being.

2. Legislation related to the environment: it is important to consider the correct management of waste and what the uses of raw materials may be for the creation of packaging, for this reason this legislation monitors and controls good practices in terms of phytosanitary and zoosanitary type laws.

3. Legislation with commercial practices: It relates to the way in which the marking and labeling of packages is carried out.

4. Legislation in Colombia: within these you can find and understand the following specifications:

NTC 1918, which aims to "establish the method for the designation of hermetic metal containers for food and beverages and specifies the tolerances allowed in their capacity", standard in which the classification of this type of containers is developed, whether they are round, square, rectangular, oval, oblong and trapezoidal. They also relate the issue of tolerance allowed on their capacity, as well as the dimensions that these containers must have for the commercialization of food products in the Colombian market.

NTC 1117 which aims to "establish the requirements that must be met and the tests that non-returnable glass containers must be submitted to, which are intended to contain food products for human consumption". This standard excludes glass containers that are intended to pack refreshing beverages, which are covered by NTC 3620 and NTC 3642.

NTC 1257 which "establish the requirements that low density polyethylene films must meet for food packaging"

NTC 1468 which aims to "establish the requirements that the tests to which paper or cardboard containers used to pack milk, dairy derivatives and juices must be submitted"

NTC 512-1 Establish the minimum requirements of the labels of the containers or packages in which food products are sold”

NTC 512-2 Establish the conditions and requirements that the nutritional labeling of packaged foods marketed in Colombia must meet on whose labels declare nutritional information"

Resolution 1407 of 2018 Minambiente that regulated the use of paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal packaging, and that has a direct impact on the industrial sector. The new regulations are aimed at optimizing the use of material in containers and packaging.

MERCOSUR / GMC / RES No 03/92: General Criteria for Food Containers and Equipment in Contact with Food MERCOSUR \ GMC \ RES36 / 93 - Mercosur Technical Regulation for Labeling of Packaged Foods.
If you are thinking that your business model can reduce its impact on the ecological or carbon footprint, we invite you to deepen and review these legislations, so that you can embark on your path towards sustainable production, with all the necessary guarantees and regulations.
